Years later, Durrin is inexplicably pardoned. He immediately returns to his notorious employer, intent on finally getting his hands on that scroll. But his next assignment-a second assassination, this time the 18-year-old daughter of the dead king-gives him qualms by day and nightmares by night.

In his search for answers, Durrin discovers a far more important scroll: the scroll of his life, the sum total of all his dark deeds, kept by the angels and demons that walk his world unseen.

To rewrite that scroll, Durrin must foil the assassination he was hired to perform, stop the war he helped to start, and relinquish the ancient scroll he once sought. On the way, he must battle a vengeful general, a band of sky pirates, the shrewd politician he once idolized, and the archdemon intent on dragging Durrin to eternal torment.
