The clock ticked ominously in the dimly lit apartment, shadows stretching across the walls like dark tendrils.
Jane's hands shook as she picked up her phone, her heart pounding in her chest.
She glanced at the mirror, catching a glimpse of her reflection-eyes wild, lips trembling.
With a deep breath, she dialed 911. "Police emergency," a calm voice answered.
"Come to 123 Maple Street," Jane's voice was urgent, laced with desperation.
"Unless it's going to be a vulture's desire..."
"Ma'am, can you explain what's happening?" The dispatcher's tone shifted from routine to concerned.
"No time!" Jane interrupted, panic rising within her. "Just come!...
As she hung up, the silence felt suffocating.
Memories flooded her mind-her ex-boyfriend's betrayal with her former best friend, the gut-wrenching pain of being replaced.
She could almost hear their laughter echoing in her ears, mocking her.
With tears streaming down her face, Jane sank to the floor, clutching the phone tightly.
A dark resolve settled within her; if she couldn't have justice.
The shadows in the room seemed to close in around her as she whispered into the emptiness, "They'll regret this..."
In that moment, Jane made a choice-one that would turn suspicion on those she once loved and leave them haunted by questions that would never be answered.
