Parent-teacher communication tips: Teachers and families must communicate regularly for students to succeed. In an effective communication environment, students receive higher grades, graduate more likely, and succeed more in postsecondary education. Additionally, absenteeism drops by up to 40% when schools cultivate strong family relationships.

Besides school-home communication, there is another aspect of school communication that must not be overlooked: district-to-community communication. District-level communications roles shape schools' ecosystems and set the tone for how all communication is carried out-whether it's between a district and external stakeholders or educating school staff on how to connect with families.

How does teacher-parent communication work?

Taking part in a two-way conversation between a teacher and parent is an ongoing process. A teacher-parent-guardian-family relationship supports a student's education and well-being by sharing information and updates. Parents and teachers need to communicate with one another to create a collaborative partnership that enhances the student's learning experience.

During parent-teacher conferences, teachers share information about assignments, grades, assessment results, behaviour, and social and emotional learning. Teachers also share students' strengths, from their perspective, where they may need some help, and overall information relating to the entire class and school.

Parents share how their student is doing at home and any concerns they may have, and ask questions about their student and how they can help the student succeed.
