Bryse Weisz, a passionate lover of tea and the herbs she grows in her secret garden, has never believed in fate or the sermons that guide her village's faith. In Castle Combe, everyone lives in fear of a monster that dwells in the nearby forest-a wolf that, according to legends, is none other than the devil in disguise. Recent disappearances have fueled the fear and turned religion into a mandatory refuge for the community. But for Bryse, life is nothing more than a series of choices dictated by fear or convenience, and her skepticism distances her even further from those around her.
Her father, the most revered counselor in the village, sees her as an opportunity to strengthen his political position. To achieve this, he plans to marry her off to the heir of the Carterbury family, a family of preachers who have ruled Castle Combe from the church pews.
On the night of the engagement... that cursed night, Bryse, dressed in white (soon stained red), makes a desperate decision. She flees into the Combe forest, the very place that has terrified her village for generations.
However, her escape quickly turns into terror when she comes face to face with the demon of the forest: the wolf, a creature with golden eyes that seems to have been waiting for her. When her future family and a group of religious zealots come after her to return her to the altar, it will be the very beast that becomes her protector. But at what cost?
