"You're not running. Maybe you've learned," he mused, circling me.

"Or maybe I'm just too tired to run," I countered, but the tremor in my voice betrayed my bravado.

"Running is futile, Princessa." He nodded and stepped closer, his proximity sending a shiver down my spine. "Especially from something that's already taken root inside you."

"You're wrong," I whispered, my heart pounding against my ribcage. "And you're sick. I will never feel the same as you do."

"We will see," he said, his tone suggesting a challenge.
