This story is set in Halogaland, a region of Norway, circa 600 CE, in the pre-Viking era. Herta runs away from home to avoid a bad marriage. She establishes a homestead for herself in a mountain meadow, which eventually becomes the setting of an unconventional but very loving lesbian family.
This story is loosely inspired by Maria Kvilhaug's "Blade Honer" series of historical novels set in Viking-controlled Russland. The character of Aili and her backstory is somewhat inspired by the Norwegian film "Pathfinder" (1987).
