When a young Victorian woman tries to escape an unwanted engagement, she steals away with a pocket watch from her father's study in hope of guidance and freedom. Little does she know that the pocket watch is actually magical, and belongs to Mr. Keptway, a magical skeleton claiming to be "The Tax Collector". He makes a deal with her: if she can help him find a missing "tax", or fear, he will help her reunite with her father- but if she doesn't, the pocket watch's magic will go out forever, and she will never see her father again. Although she agrees to this deal, she isn't sure if she can trust this skeleton as she wrestles with the matter of death, morals, and the grief of losing those she loves most. With her quick thinking, and her innovative mind passed down to her from her father, she tries to find a way to get him back- even if it means telling a lie or two.
