Dina Hughley, a 16-year-old vegan preppy girl, has just been turned into a vampire, a change that completely upends her world. Struggling with her new identity, Dina is torn between her moral objections to drinking blood and the darker instincts of her vampire nature. On top of this, she's grappling with confusing feelings for both girls and boys, which leads to her internalized homophobia as she tries to understand her shifting sexuality. Her journey to self-acceptance and dealing with the complexities of being both human and vampire unfolds throughout her junior year of high school.
Supporting Dina through her tumultuous transformation is Yazmin Yung, a trans teen and self-identified "vegan". Yazmin, a nerdy and empathetic sophomore, was there when Dina was and is determined to help her friend navigate her newfound reality, even though she has to hide her feelings for Dina.
Dina's complicated romantic feelings are further tested by Rylie, the 17-year-old senior football star and the "hottest" guy in school. Rylie's apparent straightness makes Dina question her own desires.
Meanwhile, Jaxson, a 147-year-old vampire, acts as Dina's mentor. Jaxson was the one who turned Dina, and he helps her adjust to her new life, though he knows the relationship between vampires and their "turned" humans is always fleeting. His urban grunge style and outspoken nature add a rebellious edge to his character, but his unresolved feelings for Dina make him question his usual detachment.
As Dina struggles with her new identity and desires, she learns to navigate the complicated dynamics of love, friendship, and transformation. The story explores themes of self-acceptance, sexuality, and the challenges of balancing one's morals with the realities of life-whether human or vampire. Ultimately, Dina's journey leads her to a place of humbling realization, where she must learn to accept who she truly is, flaws, desires, and all.
