Gerard was already 26 and was still a complete failure, whereas his younger brother Mikey, with whom he lived with was already married and was super successful with whatever uninteresting career he had. Their Mum had died April 2009 which was a year before present and was extremely disappointed in Gerard and his lifestyle which made the loss even worse. After the death of someone truly important to him, Gerard is left lonely and depressed, wondering whether or not it's worth it to keep living. One day however, Gerard meets Frank, who happens to fall out of a tree while Gerard is walking to school and nearly crushes him.
