"I didn't kill her!" I screamed, my voice tearing through the air. Five years ago, I married Aiden - my father's choice, not mine. I never loved him. He was cold, distant, and came home only to remind me how trapped I was. So I invited my best friend, Sofia, to keep me company. I thought she was helping me survive my marriage - until she started dressing up for my husband, whispering that I should divorce him, and avoiding my eyes. Then came his mother's birthday - the night everything shattered. A push. A scream. A body tumbling down the stairs. His mother - gone. And every gaze turned to me. Before I could speak, Aiden's men beat me to the ground. He looked at me with hate and grief I'll never forget. "You wanted a divorce so bad you killed my mother?" But it wasn't me. " How do you start a story? Maybe by simply saying 'Once upon a time...' or 'In a far off place 'Yea that's how most would but not me. In fact the story happened so fast it gives me whiplash thinking about how my first love became more than my best friend thru trauma. Our story really doesn't have a clear beginning,all I can say is we have known each other for a long time. It starts with us as babies, and no not just any babies but in the womb not yet born. Who would have guessed I would have to spend my life dreading the day I was born or should I say we, Before you jump to conclusions no we are not brothers just really close friends. Our moms have been best friends since Junior high,so of course we were destined to meet each other. But living together is another story. Our moms have always been close, when my dad died my mom had to raise such a hellion of a child alone which was too much for one mother to bare,which is how we met again. It had been 16 years,You would think he would remember me,but i guess the memories of me were buried so deep. Because of one unlucky night,everything changed." 'I love you,' Asher told me while the police man handcuffed him. The night glimmered in his green eyes. His dark hair was tousled, strands like conductors of the energy in his chest. "I fucking love you." In other circumstances, a few years ago, I would've easily retorted, but there was a humid substance being loaded in the unfiltered air that wrapped around my throat, and I couldn't speak. If I tried, I'd break into a full fledged scream, and possibly end up handcuffed as well. I took many steps back, retreating from the source of toxicity, suppressing a pseudo feeling of guilt but being grasped by its hands so easily I could simply lunge at my boyfriend and tell him everything would be all right, that he had done the right thing, and that I was so proud of him. But as much as I wished him to, he wasn't a child anymore, and I had ceased to be the girl he idealized. The man pushed Asher's head into the vehicle, and he repeated "I love you" over and over, like a fresh mantra. I didn't doubt his words. But there were just a few things that still made sense to me, and his voice was in the past. A relic that was rooted in a better context. Us. When I was a kid, there was one person I loved more than anyone or anything. He was my protector, my saviour, my everything...until one day he just left. He left me behind to suffer whilst he went off living his carefree life. He forgot all about me but I never forgot him. Now, after all this time, he thinks he can just swoop back in and insert himself into my life like nothing ever happened? And he expects me to thank him for it? Not happening. I'm not the same little girl he remembers, and from here on out, I intend to make his life hell, just like he did to mine... No matter how hard it is to resist all these new feelings I have towards him. Oh, and the best part about that? He's my step-uncle.
