This summer in Lani Kai was supposed to be the calm before the storm-the last taste of freedom before Nyx's final year of high school. Instead, it turned into a season that would ruin friendships, expose secrets, and destroy the one thing she thought would never change: her family.

His whole body went rigid.

I tilted my head. "Come on, spit it out."

"Like I told you, things spiraled out of control," he said, stretching his back.

I tilted my head even more. "Come on," I whispered.

He exhaled through his nose. "She's not you, Nyx. That's why."
