April 11, 2024. Alternate Timeline, consciousness studies took a weird turn in 2012. The first president assassination in years ended with many laws and regulations passing that shouldn't have, resulting in many corrupt and close-minded people coming into power, not to mention the start of World War Three that went south for everyone involved. We got lucky that the weather's been the biggest threat the last eight years.
Out of the wreckage and apocalyptic end of the human race there's a newly formed governing base of operations consisting of the scientists who remained on the Moon. Along with stolen technology they have begun to kidnap children in an attempt to rebuild a more organized form of human civilization. Everyone on Earth more or less fends for themselves except for a few floating cities that keep in contact with the new evolving government. Most people are fighting amongst each other about what the future should look like, and now you're trying to prove to me that psychic animals and talking dragons exist. What more could you want to know?

For a shy small-town bookworm hiding from government raids and dodging anything from unfriendly locals to unscheduled weather anomalies, everything seems rather fine.
