The Margherita Pizza Legend
One of the most famous stories of pizza's history is tied to Queen Margherita of Savoy. In 1889, during a visit to Naples, the queen reportedly asked to try the local pizza. The story goes that a Neapolitan pizzaiolo (pizza maker) named Raffaele Esposito created a pizza topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, representing the colors of the Italian flag (red, white, and green). This pizza was named "Pizza Margherita" in her honor, and it is often considered the first "modern" pizza.
