Della Hale was the overshadowed older sister of Rosalie Hale-by age twenty, she still wasn't married, making her parents-particularly her father-very angry. Instead, Della fell in love with a poor man named Paul. When the Hales learned of Della's romance (and the fact that she was pregnant with Paul's child), they berated her and shunned her.

Della snuck out of the home that night, heading to Rosalie's friend, Vera's house, when she found Rosalie, bloody and crying in an alley.

The mysterious Carlisle Cullen approached, and Della begged him to save her sister, sensing that he wasn't human. She didn't care about Carlisle's strange nature, just that Rosalie would be okay.
