A year after he started hunting with his father, Dean decided he couldn't do it anymore. He couldn't risk leaving Sam without a parent. The Yellow Eyed demon had taken Mary and the vengeance had taken John. Dean couldn't let it consume him. When John dies on a hunt, Dean does not take up his mantle. Instead he takes a job, settles down, and works his ass off.
After sending Sammy off to college, he decides its time to conquer his fears and follow his dreams of becoming a firefighter.
