Daemon has lived for thousands of years, experiencing countless lives, but as time passes, the loneliness grows. He knows it's part of God's plan, yet the isolation persists. Cut off from his family and his heavenly home, Daemon was sent to Earth with a mission: to protect dreams. The Devil, however, has been corrupting dreams, stealing half-angel children after they turn 16 and recruiting them to the dark side.
Daemon is the younger brother of Michael, and though few know it, God tasked him with saving these children from falling to darkness in this Holy War. When Daemon first sees Vita at 16, she is already broken, and he wonders if he can save her. But Vita is different. She cannot see or hear him as other children do. Daemon can only reach her in her dreams, causing her to wake in a paralyzed state, terrified. Neither Daemon nor the other angels understand why she is like this.
Unbeknownst to them, from the moment she was adopted at 16, Daemon has been watching over Vita. She can feel his presence but doesn't understand who he is or why he's there. Vita's tragic past is the key to it all: her mother, Lilliana, had fallen in love with an angel, which altered the fate of the world. Lilliana died giving birth to Vita, and the angel, heartbroken, returned to Heaven. Left alone, Vita grew up in a hospital, abandoned, with no one to care for her.
Most half-angels are the offspring of fallen angels, which is why the Devil seeks to claim their souls. But Vita is different-she is holy through and through. Still, the Devil wants her as his prized possession, an angel to fight against her own family, her own father.
Vita and Daemon's relationship begins with fear. She sees him in her dreams and believes him to be a sleep paralysis demon. Paralyzed with fear, she is terrified each time she wakes. Daemon, however, is determined to reach her, but she struggles to see him for who he truly is: her savior from the darkness.
