Esperanza is preparing for her first ever Caraval. This year, her father, the mysterious Legend, is letting her do it solo after 13 years of waiting. Esper needs to prove herself to the public. She needs to make the Caraval absolutely perfect this year. So she wanders the city in hopes of finding out the one thing people want most to make it the Caraval prize.

yet nothing can go perfectly, as she keeps getting followed by an annoying and unhelpful boy who seems to have his own secret mission and needs Espers help. while also dealing with her mother's weird obsession with finding out her "weakness"
