I was barely in my early 20s. The war in Europe had been raging for the third year. Not a single day passed without military or political topics dominating newspaper headlines. On December 8, 1941, America declared war on Japan after their submarine and air fleets attacked American forces stationed at the Pearl Harbor naval base. After that, everything changed drastically. Boston - Columbus - Camp Mackall in North Carolina - the Brooklyn Army Terminal. My job as an ordinary waitress at a local café was replaced by duty. A duty to save hundreds of soldiers on the battlefield, men trained and prepared to do one thing - take the lives of enemies. My responsibility was the complete opposite of theirs - to save lives.
