Malta was initially a prisoner; Zuko thought that if he couldn't capture the Avatar, he could bring her home as a backup. However, she eventually became Zuko's and his uncle's trusted friend. A light appeared in the sky one winter day, and Zuko believed it led to the Avatar. Blinded by his ambitions, he locked her away to prevent her from stopping him and punished her severely for her "bad behavior." Malta often wondered where she stood with them. After briefly capturing the Avatar, Zuko managed to escape and free her. Malta's distinctive horns made her stand out, but she unfortunately lost her memory in the process. When she woke up on Appa, the flying bison, he mistakenly believed she must have been his slave or prisoner. However, Malta had no way of knowing for sure.

My eyes were literally glowing, there was no mistaking it. It was not a reflection of light, or any of the other excuses I had used or others had assumed. They were glowing a light sapphire blue color. It was not a bright glow, but it was definitely a glow. Glowing eyes were not normal. Okay, at this point I had to admit it, I was no longer normal.
