Free spirited, punk rock, out lesbian Samantha, from downtown California is new at Riverside High. She knows her way around a skateboard and is just about every definition of the word rebel there is. Rebelling against the system and standing up for social issues. With a sharp mouth and baggy clothes she instantly becomes friends with the school's outcasts. Upon seeing the absolutely stunning and out of reach Courtney, that people never seem to shut up about, she instantly falls hard.

Popular, uptown girl Courtney has the perfect life, coming from a rich upper class family, being head cheerleader with the perfect boyfriend and the perfect friends, things couldn't be better. Only problem is, she feels stuck and is tired of constantly having to be perfect. When the confident, Samantha, different from any girl she's ever seen, starts at Riverside. Her life is turned upside down in all the best ways and she starts to question all that she's ever known.

When the two girls finally meet, the chemistry is instant although being polar opposites of each other. Samantha shows Courtney her world, bringing her out of her bubble, on escapades and to protests. While Courtney challenges Samantha in other ways, helping her to not overreact and to choose her battles. But in 90's America, with Courtney's classist and homophobic friends and family, the two are forced to keep their newfound romance a secret.
