Elara Finch, a 25 year-old medic in Jackson, is quiet, sensitive soul with a traumatic past. After surviving an attack that took her family, she was taken in by Tommy Miller, who taught her to survive and to nurture her medical skills. Despite her past, Elara empathetic and kind, though emotionally closed off, keeping close to her journals and pens.
Joel, gruff, cold and emotionally scarred from his own losses, arrives in Jackson after a brutal attack, hoping his younger brother would be his saving grace. Tommy hands Joel off to Elara and he is instantly rue and distasteful toward the girl, who he views as soft and weak. When Tommy insists that Elara is the best one to tend to Joel's injuries, he hesitantly allows her to patch him up but makes it clear that he doesn't want her help.
