Until the day she wandered into one of her parent's lab and accidentally gets a radioactive substance injected into her. 
And after that, on a trip back from Portugal, her parents and little brother die in a car crash.
Soon after that, Iron Man comes to her and offers to be her mentor. Nicole hastily agrees and becomes a superhero apprentice.
