She met him when she was twenty-one, and he was how many centuries old, seriously, who keeps track? They hit it off, though, and became great friends-like a really great friendship. You know, the kind where you tell each other your deepest secrets and high-five when you save a puppy.

But, oh, dear old Carlisle, apparently he couldn't just stop there. No, no. He wanted more. Like, so much more. Why? Because, surprise, she was his mate. Yeah, the whole "soulmate" thing. Except for one tiny detail: she had a boyfriend, and-get this-was pregnant with his child. So, naturally, everyone's favourite human-friendly vampire gets all mopey and dramatic. Woe is me, he thought. Why stick around to watch her fall for someone else when I'm a literal immortal being whose only claim to fame is sparkling in the sun like some kind of glittery disco ball?

So what does he do? He leaves. Takes his entire family along with him, because if you're going to make a dramatic exit, you might as well go big, right? Tragic. And sure, maybe he did think he was doing the right thing. Maybe he thought he was sparing himself the agony of seeing Gwen with someone else. But, spoiler alert: it was the biggest mistake he could have made.

Why, you ask? Oh, you know, the small matter of the man he left her with turning out to be a psycho-a real evil, never-go-near-this-person-in-a-dark-alley kind of guy. This guy was like if every toxic ex you've ever had formed a supervillain team.
