The world was broken. Cities had crumbled, and the future had become a graveyard of failed promises. Time, once a river flowing endlessly forward, had been turned into a tool-one that could reshape the past to serve the desperate needs of the present.
He was a soldier, trained to step into the fabric of history and pull its thread. He was not meant to ask questions, only to obey. And yet, as he stared at the holographic image of the boy, a child no older than ten, doubt crept into his mind.
The mission was simple; save the boy. Prevent the accident that would end his life. The directive was clear: He is the key. Without him, humanity has no future.
But simplicity was a lie, and the soldier knew it. Time was never so kind, and neither was fate.
He looked at the boy's face-innocent, ordinary. A child who should have meant nothing more than another name in history's unending pages. Yet the records painted a different story. This boy would grow into a man who could unite nations or destroy them. A saviour-or a monster. And the soldier's orders ensured only one thing: the boy must live.
"Why him?" he asked his commanders. Their answers had been hollow. "Because he must." That was all they would say.
The soldier clenched his fists, his heart heavy with the weight of what he was about to do. The past was waiting, its echoes ready to be rewritten. But deep inside, a question gnawed at him: What if saving him isn't salvation? What if it's the end?
He stepped toward the time portal, its light humming with the energy. This was no act of heroism, he realised. It was an act of faith-and faith was a dangerous thing.
With a deep breath, he crossed the threshold, the world dissolving around him.
