He hissed, ignited by anger. I tried to push myself up to my knees but the man was faster, returning my punch with one of his own. The pain stole my breath. I staggered but did not fall. Another sharp pain in my scalp followed as he dug his hands around my braid and pulled, his left arm moving forward to lock around my arms. My ears picked up the sound of him unsheathing his knife.

I stiffened, waiting for the cool kiss of the blade against my neck, for the warm blood that would follow, pouring out of me until I died. But death never came. I didn't dare open my eyes, not when I could feel the presence of the blade hovering just above my neck.
