Birdie Jackson hasn't spoken a word in two months. After losing her family, she decided talking never helped and promised herself she'd never speak again. Now, she and her dad live in his car, surviving on bottles of water and cans of food. It's not much, but it's all they have.

One day, Vincent leaves to find more supplies. He tells Birdie to stay in the car with a knife for protection. She doesn't like the idea, but she's only seven, and no one listens to kids, not even her dad.

It's been three weeks since he left, and Birdie is scared and frustrated. When he doesn't come back, she decides to go find him herself. But her plan doesn't go the way she hoped. Lost in the woods and in danger, she's saved by a rough, grumpy stranger - a man Birdie instantly dislikes but might need more than she wants to admit.
