John Price (1940s)

England, 1949

John Price, a retired soldier in his early forties who never fought in the second World War due to his chronic leg injury, now spends his days farming, caring for his animals, and reading the daily paper with a cup of tea in his hand.

Jennifer Brooks, a woman in her early twenties who's just gotten a job at a bakery. Even with the limitations that come with being a woman during this time, she feels capable of doing anything a man can. After she's gotten her father to pay for her house first, of course. She's yet to be allowed a credit card or a house in her own name, but why should that stop her from being an independent woman?

John and Jennifer cross paths and end up seeing each other more often than most neighbors.

Mr. Price seems happy to have her there, content in her presence, whilst she tries to figure out why he's treating her as if they've known each other for years...
