Her breath caught, but she refused to look away. "Maybe not," she whispered, her voice trembling. "But you can't save yourself from me either."

For a moment, his mask slipped-a flicker of something raw and unspoken passing between them. Then it was gone, replaced by the cold, calculating smirk that had become his armor.
