The gods are in revolt.
When Eros' arrows shot Apollo and a nymph-one of love and the other of resistance-he wasn't expecting the god of light and the sun to retaliate and rally gods and mortals against him. A plan was hatched, arrows were mixed up, and now Eros is in love with Psyche-and so are Apollo and his twin and goddess of the hunt, Artemis.
So when Zeus strips Eros of his powers and matchmaking privileges, he has to prove himself worthy of Psyche in the most humanlike way as possible: to beat the gods in a game of love and chance.
