Ellie is defeated by failing to kill Abby. She lets her trauma get to her head, causing her to blackout for a second, letting Abby slip away. She can feel guilt and rage eating her from the inside out, to her bones to her blooded, wet skin, watching Abby leave on the boat only increases it. So much guilt and shame filled her, that she couldn't bring herself to go back to Jackson. She felt like she had failed so many people, including Joel.
Ellie truly believes that she will be alone forever now. Until she meets a girl who is similar to her in ways Ellie can't imagine.
