When a mysterious disease breaks out in Saint Edwards, the renowned medicus Oscar Fleming is sent to investigate. The people welcome him as a blessing, nicknaming him The Apostle.

But Mother Carolina, the spiritual leader of the town, is hesitant to approve of Fleming's methods that clash with her religious ideals. In an attempt to bring Fleming to comply with her conditions, she forces him into a dungeon laboratory. But Fleming nonetheless pursues his experiments with grim determination, convinced that his work will save lives - even if it means bending morality to its breaking point.
