It's an absolute warzone. Literally. Louis is fighting for his life when the government runs low on soldiers and creates a forced draft. At least he met his best friend Harry in boot camp.
Told from Louis' perspective for the majority of the story, Louis always wanted to be a writer. He writes in his journal every night now that his dream seems to be unobtainable. His goals have shifted. Survive to the end of the war and maybe he and Harry could... no. That's too much to wish for. But then again, maybe staying alive is also.
