Madelyn Barnes grew up as the girl next door, neighbors with Elena Gilbert. The girls were best friends, and they told each other everything. Elena would tell her about the arguments she had with her then-boyfriend Matt, and how she met this new guy who turned out to be a freaking vampire. Yeah, crazy. And then Madelyn would tell her about her latest book obsession and newest fictional boyfriend. Oh, and about the reoccurring dreams she's been having.

As a child, Madelyn would get constant nightmares that would keep her up at night. They all revolved around the same thing-- a descriptive view of her death, in many different ways and styles. With them being so frequent, the dreams had became less scary and more of a nuisance to Madelyn.

She never understood what the dreams meant, or why she was evening having them in the first place.

The night of the masquerade ball, things began to get... interesting. In an attempt to save Elena, Madelyn ends up being kidnapped alongside her best friend, and a whole new plot is revealed, causing many questions to bubble up at the surface. Good thing the man they were kidnapped for has all the answers, and so much more.
