Malvin is the son of one of the lower houses. He doesn't have much power on his own, but after finding out there's a slave auction for rehabilitated vampires, he decides to give up his high status and try to gain power on his own. 

He rescues one of the vampires in the auction, enlisting his help for his selfless endeavor. The vampire, Acheron, feels greatly debted to Malvin, and although he finds him overly optimistic, he also finds that his smile is worth trying to go against the underground forces for.

He mumbled, the sound barely audible, even in the uncomfortable silence that hung in the room like smog. "Virge-" "Please..." A single tear dropped from one of his eyes as he squeezed them both shut as tight as he could. Slowly, Roman's grip loosened and Virgil reached for the doorknob, slipping out of the room and into the safety of his own. ATTENTION: This book is undergoing editing. In some places, it's major, like deleting an entire scene, and in others, I need to change wording around because I don't have an editor to tell me that things sound like shit.
