The United States has fractured into several warring factions, each with its own vision of how society should be rebuilt after a catastrophic collapse. The "Mindforge Trials" are a brutal, government-sanctioned competition where the strongest minds and bodies are pitted against each other. The Trials are held in massive, secretive arenas known as "Forgebounds," hidden deep within the wastelands of old America.

Pairs of boys and girls with numbers one through thirty live, while the others with numbers of thirty-one and beyond are purged to maintain population control.
