When her grandfather is taken by the Ministry, Kaia is forced into the very system her family spent years warning her about. To survive, she must endure the cameras, the sponsors, the bloodshed, and the terrifying arenas designed to break more than just her body.
Then there is Rowan - dangerous, unreadable, and always watching her a little too closely.
He saves her when he should not. Protects her when it costs him. Knows secrets about the Trials he refuses to explain. And the closer Kaia gets to him, the harder it becomes to tell whether he is her greatest chance at survival... or another lie dressed like rescue.
But Rowan is not the only boy haunting the Trials.

Princess Illyana is the eldest of the king's five daughters. In a few days time, the Queens Trial will begin and there are only two possible outcomes. The first is she will fail and get sacrificed. The second is she will win and be forcibly wed to a cruel man and live the rest of her life knowing she is alive because her sisters are dead. Illyana wants more. She wants to rule the Kingdom of Vivelle with her sisters by her side. She only has a few days left to come up with a plan before the Trial begins. Well, welcome to Karyln, formerly known as the United States before World War three and four. In Karyln, parents try to plan pregnancies to end right around the first of the year because when you're born decides how the rest of your life will be. The first boy and girl born gets the number one, they are projected to receive the best life possible. The next boy and girl get the number two, and I think it's pretty easy to guess how the rest goes. The only thing standing between the elite society and their perfect lives, is The Trial. Every year, on the first of June, everybody who has or is having their eighteenth birthday joins. It's a race to the finish line in teams of four and you could either become a higher or lower number depending on when you reach the end. This was created in hope to give those with lower numbers a chance to climb up the ranks. The Trial then developed into more. Pairs of boys and girls with numbers one through thirty live, while the others with numbers of thirty-one and beyond are purged to maintain population control.
