Prologue
"I think they're finally gone," I whispered, breath ragged, chest burning from the sprint.
Wrong.
"I see her! Over there - by the trees!" a voice shouted behind me.
"Ugh, seriously?!" I groaned, spinning on my heel and taking off again.
Branches scratched at my arms as I burst through the clearing - only to skid to a halt. A massive waterfall roared ahead. No bridge. No way around. Just the edge.
Jump and maybe die. Stay and definitely get caught.
What do I do?
Think, Kaylee. Think!
I yanked off one shoe and tossed it near the edge, letting it land just right - like I'd slipped, fallen, maybe drowned. Let them believe it. I darted to the side, squeezing into a narrow cave hidden by moss. I kept running until the cave spat me out the other side.
"Yes!" I gasped. "Don't mess with me!"
Just as I looked up- bam! I crashed into something solid and warm. We both hit the ground.
"Hey! Can't you say sorry-ugh, you know what, forget it," I muttered, brushing myself off. But something made me stop.
The guy I'd slammed into was bleeding. Scratches everywhere. Clothes torn. He looked... wrecked.
'Just leave him,' my instincts said.
But I couldn't. Something about him felt familiar - too familiar.
I turned back and knelt beside him. "What happened to you?" I asked, but he didn't answer. He was barely conscious.
"Where do you live? Maybe I can-"
His eyes rolled back. His body slumped.
"Woah-hey!"
I caught him just before he collapsed completely.
Great. He fainted.
"Stop walking away from me!"
I rolled my eyes before turning around to face him.
"Oh sorry Alpha, I didn't know I had to ask your permission to be excused."
I spoke mockingly and bowed dramatically, his eye colour turned blood red to show his anger and I smirked in victory.
"Let me get something straight, I am not one of you, so don't you start treating me like I am."
