Jacquarious Whelan liked his old school, but his parents didn't. Fed up with the violence and drug arrests erupting within the Browning Heights educational district, Pierre and LaKwesha enroll their son in Goldengate Academy, an idyllic campus filled to the brim with fair skin and wealthy pockets. Fearless to defy the expectations of the his familial circle's more derisive members, Jacquarious soars amid this new environment. He makes his mark quickly as both a talented sportsman and a budding essayist, impressing his doting English teacher so thoroughly that she nets him a position writing for her husband's national news column.

Championing the causes of the oppressed and the socially downtrodden, Jacquarious dons the moniker Whiteface as he assumes the tentative mantle of bringing present-day injustice to light through gripping headlines and scathing editorials. But not all eyes in his new and glinting community look on with approval at the pseudonymous writer's meteoric rise to stardom. As a string of increasingly racially motivated crimes breaks out, bearing the mark of a killer eerily familiar with secrets far too intimate for Jacquarious to ignore, the members of a cookie-crusted city smothered in endless cream find themselves in the midst of a horror too terrifying for words, a reckoning near unfathomable, a nightmare drenched in blood...blood that may well be Jacquiarious's very own.
