Eurydice was a hungry young girl. A runaway, from everywhere she'd ever been. She was no stranger to the world, no stranger to the wind. Orpheus was a poor boy, but he had a gift to give. He could make you see how the world could be, in spite of the way it is. Josephine was a hungry young girl, and outsider always looking in. Pushed aside by all except the fates, always singing the songs of her past. Percy was a poor boy, but he had a gift to give. He saw Jo, not for who others saw, but for who she was.

When I was young, I was always told that everyone loved a tragic Greek love story. Orpheus and Eurydice. Apollo and Hyacinth. Hero and Leander. Achilles and Patroclus. I had asked my mother why so many of those stories didn't have happy endings. She just gave me a grim smile and told me how the world of the gods was tricky. There was a lot about it that I didn't understand yet. That was 13 years ago. I think I understand it now.
