The Wolf Beneath the Moon

The fog clung to Silvercliff like a secret too heavy to let go. It smothered the cobblestone streets, blurred the edges of buildings, and made Raven's skin prickle as she stepped off the bus. Her father was already rambling about the town's history, the same way he always did when they moved.

"This place has a rich past, Raven," he said, shouldering his leather satchel. "Did you know Silvercliff is home to one of the oldest werewolf myths in North America? The Lunar Throne, they call it. Fascinating, isn't it?"

Raven rolled her eyes. "Fascinating," she muttered, dragging her suitcase behind her. It squeaked loudly against the uneven road, announcing her arrival to anyone paying attention. Not that there were many people to notice-the town seemed half-abandoned, its windows dark and lifeless.

Her dad was a historian obsessed with legends and folklore, and Silvercliff was just another stop on his endless quest for the next big discovery. To Raven, it was just another dead-end town where she'd waste a year of her life before packing up and leaving again.

That night, the wind howled through the trees, rattling the windows of their creaky, too-large house at the edge of the forest. Raven lay awake, staring at the cracked ceiling, trying to drown out her father's muffled excitement about some "ancient carvings" he'd found in the woods earlier.

She couldn't sleep. The forest was calling her.

By midnight, Raven was slipping on her boots and jacket, creeping down the stairs and out the back door. The Moonblood Forest stretched like a black void before her, the faint silver of the moonlight barely piercing the thick canopy.

The stories said no one survived if they wandered too far into the forest. But Raven didn't believe in stories.
