Greek mythology. A retelling of the goddess Persephone's story. Persephone is a young, beautiful but insecure goddess. Her father Zeus arranged her marriage to Hades, the god of the Underworld, but she refused to marry such an evil god. After being kidnapped, she finds that her father arranged that, too. Stuck in the Underworld, betrayed and lonely in a miserable marriage, she vows to get away...until she starts to realize her husband isn't so bad, after all. When escape is offered she accepts it, but realizes she is stuck forever in the Underworld...and isn't as upset as she should be. Her family is, however, and it seems like Persephone will never get a break.

A retelling of the famous story of Hades and Persephone. Hades, the God of the Dead, Lord of the Underworld has everything he could ever want except for one thing. Love. Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, a controlling parent hell bent on keeping her daughter "safe" for all eternity, is constantly under the supervision and iron grip of her mother, and over time, it has created a spark of rebellion that yearns for freedom. Through a series of mistakes, clever planning and permission from Zeus, Hades and Persephone fall in love down in the Underworld. But this doesn't sit well with Demeter who is completely unwilling to except that her adult daughter isn't a baby anymore. And so as Zeus tries to reason with the love struck Hades and the psychotic and increasingly violent Demeter, things get more and more complicated as no one is seemingly ever satisfied with anything.

In a modern world where ancient gods walk among mortals, the balance of power is disrupted when Zeus, the king of the olymyan gods, commits a heinous act: the rape and murder of Persephone, the beloved wife of Hades and queen of the underworld. Consumed by grief and rage, Hades, ruler of the underworld, embarks on a quest for vengeance against his brother Zeus. Leaving the confines of the underworld, Hades seeks allies among the gods, rallying them to his cause in a bid to overthrow Zeus and restore justice. As Hades traverses the mortal realm, he encounters allies and adversaries alike. Athena, goddess of wisdom, joins his cause, appalled by Zeus's actions and eager to see justice served. However, not all gods are swayed by Hades's call to arms. Some remain loyal to Zeus, while others harbor their own agendas, complicating Hades's mission. Amidst the turmoil, mortals become unwitting pawns in the gods' power struggle. As alliances shift and betrayals unfold, Hades must navigate treacherous waters to confront Zeus and avenge the death of Persephone. But in a world where gods play by their own rules, the outcome of Hades's quest remains uncertain, and the fate of both mortals and immortals hangs in the balance.

Persephone finds herself in a difficult place; the land of the underworld. Is love enough to save Hades in this lifetime, is it enough to save her? A war is coming, and a sense charm and temptation lingers in the air.

Hades and Persephone is a story that has so many different sides to it. Some people romanticize their relationship (often without taking into account certain aspects of the myth) while others insist that Hades was nothing but perverse and awful... even though taking Persephone, after having her father's permission, was quite normal for the time! This is a retelling of the ancient myth, with all the ancient components to it. I researched the story from many different sources and tried to make it as accurate as possible. The only writer's license was the amount of time she spent in the Underworld before Hermes came-- I never found an exact number, so I wrote it as six months, partly so that they had time to truly fall for each other, partly so that she would return to the mortal realm immediately after being returned to Demeter. Persephone is a character who understands the place goddesses and women have in the world, understands the normalcy of her capture, but still struggles with feeling like it's unjust. Hades is a god with few romantic relationships in his past (Leuce and Minthe) who hadn't fallen for anyone for a while and wasn't quite sure how to treat a goddess in a realm he never visited. This is the story.
