Eliana Rosewood is about to start her first year in the deadliest quadrant at Basgiath College. The only problem is that she is not going willingly. As a marked one and a child of the leaders of the Tyrrish rebellion she and countless others are to be conscripted to enter the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College. The only solace she feels at having to enter the death college is to see her childhood best friend and the first boy she ever gave her heart to , Xaden Riorson. Her and Xaden haven't seen each other since the day that their parents were executed six years ago. He will do whatever it takes to make sure she survives and she will do everything in her power to make sure that he never has to face the darkness alone, even if it means walking through it herself.

Now in his final year at Basgiath War College, he's risen to the rank of Wingleader. He is focused on one thing: getting every kid of the rebellion bonded to a dragon. Then the real work can begin. But he hadn't counted on Violet Sorrengail, the General's daughter, entering the Rider's Quadrant. She's not supposed to be here and she's about to throw every plan he has made into chaos. This was written prior to the release of Iron Flame, so all theories and speculation are my own and unconfirmed. It's my best guess at exploring how Xaden might have felt throughout the story and features new scenes with Liam, Garrick, Imogen, Sgaeyl and Tairn. Major plot spoilers from the very first chapter. Conscription day is the worst. Especially if you're a Riorson. ~~~~~~~~~ "Anyone else feel like changing their mind?" Xaden shouts, casting his gaze out over the remaining cadets. "No? Excellent. Roughly half of you will be dead by this time next summer. A third of you again the year after that. And the same your last year." He briefly catches my gaze before moving on. "No one cares who your mommy or daddy is here." Unless your mommy or daddy sided with my father, then everyone cares. "Even King Tauri's second son died during his Threshing. So tell me again: Do you feel invincible now that you've made it into the Riders Quadrant? Untouchable? Elite?" This time no one cheers. "Because you're not untouchable or special to them." Xaden points a finger at the navy-blue dragon behind him and leans forward slightly, and says, deadly calm, "To them, you're just the prey." I swallow the lump in my throat. He's trying to scare us, they all are, so the dragons know who to pick off. But I will not let any of them win. I may not have had a choice in coming to the Riders Quadrant, but now that I'm here, the only way I'm leaving is on the back of a dragon.

This book is a fan fiction of Rebecca Yarros' Empyrean series. It takes place one year before fourth wing, I plan to make books that follow the series. So there should be five more after this one, six in total. While he's close to both Xaden and Katrina, it's always been Katrina, who he calls Kate, that he's turned to first when he's overwhelmed. Kate has always been his safe haven and he doubts the she even knows that. As time goes on while they're in Basgiath, Garrick has started noticing how his stomach flutters whenever Kate walks into a room and the way that his breathing becomes shaky whenever she gives him one of her extra tight hugs.
