"it is strange, huh?" she mumbled absently, her attention returning to the fireworks. this time, she looked thoughtful, her smile gentle, "people see them as a wish, or a promise, or even a confession. to me, they are nothing more than an innocent phenomena. hopelessly addicted to almosts and maybes," she glanced at him from the corner of her eyes, tilting her head ever so slightly, "do you know what i mean?"
there were hundreds of things chishiya wanted to say in response to her question. no, i don't know what you mean. what are you, a child? fireworks are fireworks, nothing more.
then, there were other things that ran through his mind. do i know you? do you know me? why do you haunt me in my dreams? in my life? what happened to me when i almost died by that meteor? what did i forget? why did you let me go? i love you, you know. i should've said it before.
he wasn't sure where those last thoughts surfaced from. but rather than feel repulsed by the idea, it felt right. like he had known all along and now that the opportunity presented itself again, he didn't want to let it go.
he turned his body to face her own, scanning her features more closely. her hair lay messily around her face, her clothes ordinary, and her eyes were bright. expectant, soft, knowing, and chishiya thought of the sun. and grinned, "i'm starting to."
