The Dark lord lost his sanity, before the war, him and his then girlfriend,future wife, became the dark lord and lady. Their knights of Warpurgis [Deatheaters] were unstoppable with the couple ruling them. When the dark lady died the dark lord, Voldemort, lost his sanity. Descending into madness , when a prophecy was given to say someone other than his wife will be his equal , he tried to kill the individual. Little did he know that his wife, was constantly reincarnating, and the boy, he tried to kill, was her reincarnation.
