As a reward for their services to the wizarding war, the remaining members of the order are granted a say in the punishments of the captured Death Eaters. When Draco Malfoy's future is put up for debate, Hermione Granger argues fiercely for him to rot in Azkaban with his father. She is entirely outvoted, but begrudgingly accepts a compromise. Draco Malfoy's wand will be seized, his magical abilities harnessed and he himself forced to serve in the ministry's rehabilitation programme under careful supervision.

10 years later, he shows up outside Hermione Granger's office.

The rehabilitation programme have deemed him a "Wizarding-world asset" with extraordinary magical ability, and is therefore issued a full pardon by order of the ministry, and to be trained carefully by Hermione Granger to take on the role of "Top Auror". But that is Hermione's position, and she will not give it up, nor will she share, but with ultimatums given she realises her only option is to work with Draco Malfoy. And even for a top Auror like Hermione Granger, it's hard to work with your enemy.
