Being raised by a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was strange on its own, but what was even stranger was when that agent was supposed to be dead. That's exactly the position that Ryan found himself in when his father figure, Phil Coulson, was stabbed by Loki, only to miraculously be brought back to life, with very little memory of how. Regardless, Ryan didn't question it, knowing that he himself didn't have the clearance level to know either.
