One exception.

Harry Potter is... well, Harry Potter. That is enough to make his aunt, uncle, and cousin despise his mere presence. Punishments grew unfair, cruel, and violent while rewards and praise grew thin, meek, backhanded, and rare.

Severus Snape is... well, Severus Snape. That's enough for him to have basic human empathy. When headmaster Dumbledore informs him that he will be doing the check on Harry, he's reluctant but agrees. When he sees what happens, he nearly crucios them.

Remus Lupin is... well, Remus Lupin. That's enough for him to be upset when he hears of a child being awfully mistreated, especially the son of James and Lily Potter. Even moreso when he sees the innocent and pure smile on his face. When he's informed of the mistreatment from Snape, he almost loses his head.
