eileen shoupe has spent her whole life caught between two worlds. as the daughter of officer shoupe, she's expected to follow the rules, keep her head down, and stay far away from trouble, especially trouble named jj maybank.

jj and eileen have never seen eye to eye. he thinks she's just another kook adjacent, rule following daddy's girl, and she sees him as reckless, hotheaded, and exactly the kind of person her father warns her about. their arguments are loud, their insults sharp, and to everyone else, they're nothing more than enemies.

but behind closed doors, when the yelling stops and the house is quiet, jj finds himself climbing through eileen's bedroom window. when things at home get bad, when he has nowhere else to go, she's the only one who lets him in. what starts as a begrudging truce turns into whispered conversations in the dark, stolen moments neither of them can explain, and a connection neither of them are ready to admit.

love is never easy, especially when it's built on everything you were taught to hate.
