Amidst the outbreak of World War I, Vermillion Academy has gone into hiding. When England declares war on Germany, the school cloaks itself in a dense remote forest away from the bustling city only a few miles away. The fear of devastating bombs and foreign attacks on their ancient school makes officials turn to a secret society within their walls that has the means for protecting the school from danger. The Apex society runs on tradition and strict leadership under their president, James Kingsley who harbours dark secrets but the intelligence to preserve the university in a time loop. Every student at Vermillion is forced to join the Apex Society once they turn eighteen, the young men get the privilege of being an imperator or dominant while girls receive the title of a cocubent, a submissive or the life long partner of their male counterparts. Sophia Astor is the newest student at Vermillion, eighteen years old and freshly picked from the hundreds of other women in Apex to be the cocubent of President James Kingsley. Will Vermillion stay in their endless loop and refuse to be swept into the great war or will Sophia go against James and break the Academy from its curse?
