Where 'ABC' by Gene Luen Yang meets 'Starry River of the Sky' by Grace Lin...

Kieran Fu and Katharyn Kuang have been inseparable since Day One, building their friendship on shared stories of ancient folktales and a love of home-cooked, non-American food. But they're more connected to those old fables than they think: riddles and red strings run deep in Kieran's family, while Katharyn can trace her family tree back to a tragic myth of star-crossed lovers. During their formative years, the pair encounter groundbreaking discoveries and strange signs that reveal the truth - and the interconnectedness - of the folktales they know and love.

When Kieran and Katharyn return home for the summer after university, their families start pushing them toward a fate of eternal union that neither of them wants. Bound by ancient prophecies and long-standing tradition, the two must decide: can they rewrite their destinies, or will the red string of fate tie them down a path they can't escape?

After all, only one thing is for certain: legends are more than lessons - and they can turn to reality in the blink of an eye.

WHEN CROWS PAINT THE SKY [ONC 2025] by carolannewrites
10 parts Ongoing
Jocelyn Jones' life has always been practical - maybe a little too practical. At 44, she has spent years worrying about everybody else, trapped in a marriage whose spark fizzled ages ago. A tomboy at heart, Joss has never been the type to swoon over fairy-tale romances, nor has she ever conformed to society's idea of what a woman "should" be. But everyone has a breaking point, and one morning, over her granola and yogurt, she decides she's had enough. She will leave her suffocating marriage and take a road trip in search of something she's spent too many years trying to hide - herself. As Joss sets off on her self-discovery sojourn, a murder of crows seem to be following her every move. And when one crow - a sharp-tongued, sarcastic creature named Quentin- suddenly starts talking to her, everything changes. Because Quentin is no ordinary crow, Quentin is her new sidekick, an opinionated mentor, and possibly the only creature on earth who can match her dry wit. With every sarcastic quip and unsolicited piece of advice, Quentin helps Joss step into her power, embrace her flaws, and take firm hold of her future's steering wheel on the road of life. When Crows Paint the Sky is a road trip like no other - a humorous and heartwarming journey of self-acceptance and independence, with a little bit of magic thrown in for good measure. With Quentin by her side, Joss discovers that sometimes, the most important journey is the one that leads you back to yourself. #ONC2025 Prompt:120. The door that closed to you many years ago has reopened, and now it's up to you to take a chance once more.

19 parts Complete
Five years ago, Cairo Quimby disappeared without a trace. His family has neglected to speak of him since, running the slightly strange but unassuming hotel he grew up in as if nothing ever happened. Until Cairo, a lone wanderer roaming a lost and dangerous world, has a run-in at a diner with mysterious strangers who are after his stepfather ⸻ as it turns out, Richard Quimby has been hiding something, and hiding something valuable. He's broken the viciously enforced code of In-Betweens by whatever his hotel is harboring, and against his better judgment, Cairo's loyalty takes him back. Back to his dreaded childhood home, back to the place to which he swore he'd never return. Cairo's family is nothing ordinary. Strange things happen when they want them to, and impossible is a limit that simply does not exist in their plane of being. But it's this strangeness that he's been rejecting, that he's been trying to run from all these years. Unfortunately, whether he likes it or not, he must enlist the help of siblings who resent him to unveil the secrets behind the vendetta against his stepfather and fight the forces determined to tear his family apart. Oh, and of course, he has to participate in a race for inheritance privileges ⸻ something he never even wanted. Cairo's own past has come back to haunt him, tangled with everyone else's and a million times worse. Time is ticking, and there are sins to atone for, blood to be spilled. #ONC2024 - Prompt 13 Total Word Count: 40,310 #1 in #intrigue 2/24-3/21 © Ginger Beckett 2024
