When Subaru first arrives in Lugnica, he quickly realizes something strange. Unlike before, where Return by Death was his only saving grace, he now possesses an ability beyond comprehension-Maharaga's Evolutionary Adaptation. Every time he dies, his body and mind adjust to whatever killed him.

At first, the change is subtle-minor improvements in endurance, faster reflexes-but as his deaths pile up, Subaru begins evolving at an unnatural rate, transforming from a powerless shut-in to a walking calamity.
